More Than Pretty Pictures

The 5 Core Values That Guide Katie Smith Photography

When I tell people I’m a pet photographer, sometimes they imagine it’s just playing with puppies and snapping cute pictures. Truth is, photography as a skillset is so much more than taking a picture and being a professional photographer adds a whole new level of intention, responsibility, and fun. In my business, Katie Smith Photography, every decision- from how I plan your session to how I deliver your final portraits- is guided by a clear set of values.

These values have shaped my business since 2009, and they’re still at the heart of everything I do.

1. Connection & Understanding

A great portrait starts before I ever pick up my camera. It’s all about paying attention. It’s listening to what you’re saying and what you’re not saying. Whether you’re a busy parent, a small business owner, or a family going through a hard season, I want to understand what this session means to you. When I know what matters most, I can create portraits that show more than what you look like—they show who you are.

2. Craftsmanship & Growth

I’ve been a photographer since 2009, and I’m still learning, growing, and improving. I love how photography combines creativity and technical skill. The little bit of challenge where I’m thinking “ok, this is a good shot but how do I go next level” is my zone of genius. I’m always studying, trying new techniques, and refining how I pose, light, and edit so that I can give my clients the best results possible.

3. Legacy Over Likes

Trendy edits and gimmicks aren’t my thing. I’m here to create images that will still look beautiful and feel meaningful decades from now. My editing style is true-to-life as beautiful and vibrant as the memories we made. I aim for a mix of relaxed moments and simple posing, so your photos feel real and flattering. And while I offer digital files, I care most about helping you enjoy your portraits in print- on your walls, in albums, and in your hands.

4. People Over Profits

My business is built on relationships, not transactions. I believe in being generous with my time, energy, and resources. Whether I’m volunteering, running a fundraiser, or offering a little extra flexibility to someone who needs it, I want my work to have a positive impact. The annual unicorn sessions that support the therapeutic riding center are just one way I give back to the community that supports me.

5. Family First, Always

I started this business to support my family and to help you celebrate yours That’s why I lead with empathy, patience, and respect for what’s going on in your life. And one small but important way I practice this value: I don’t schedule sessions on Sundays. That day is set aside for my own family, and keeping that boundary helps me stay grounded in what matters most.

Final Thoughts

When you book a session with Katie Smith Photography, you’re getting more than just a gallery of pretty pictures. You’re working with someone who takes the time to understand your story, cares deeply about the experience, and believes in preserving real moments through thoughtful, intentional photography.

If that sounds like the kind of photographer you’re looking for, I’d love to hear from you.
